Alcoholics Anonymous †Essay Essay

Alcoholics Anonymous came to be in Akron Ohio in 1935 It was formed by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob out of a desperation to stay sober and not quite knowing how to do so. Bill W. had the idea that maybe one drunk trying to help another stay sober might be the key. Originally Bill W. tried to get sober by attending a religious group, the Oxford Group, and his evolved into AA as we know it today. Bill W. had managed to put together six months of sobriety when he was out of town and was in a situation where he felt like he needed to drink. Instead of taking that first drink he reached out, trying to stay sober. He thought maybe if he helped another drunk, he would feel better and he did. This premise is still keeping drunks sober today. In the early days Dr Bob abd Bill W. would make their rounds to the hospitals trying to help others get sober. The original Big Book or book of AA was based on the fact that one-hundred people had managed to get sober at the time that book was written. Today there are thousands upon thousands of people who are recovering, not only from alcohol but many different kinds of addictions. One of the things that remains true are the original twelve steps of recovery. It is the telling of how the original pioneers got sob er and stayed sober. After all these years the program remains strong and is the spring-board for self-help groups. The twelve steps are the program of recovery and it is essential that people who want to recover and keep their disease in remission they should work the steps to the best of their ability. Many people don’t get past step 1; people falter on the steps based on what they believe at that particular moment. Many people can’t or won’t believe in something other than themselves, so step three is out-turning their lives over. Step four is a huge stumbling block, and then having to talk to someone else about what they did wrong is huge. My point is, is that is not easy. Recovery is not easy, the drinking and using part was the easier softer way. For people that would like a better life and would like to learn to live life sober, they must practice the principles of AA, it really is life and death. Many people die every day from this disease. It is my opinion that society has a responsibility to educate our children in that this is a horrific disease and anyone can become afflicted. The stigma associated with this must be eradicated in favor of a medical view that treats it as what it is; a  bio-psycho-social disease.

Shoshanna johnson essays

Shoshanna johnson essays In the current U.S. military, women fight in the battlefields along with men like never before. Long gone are the days when female soldiers were nurses or were serving in some other unseen duty. As a result, 24 female soldiers have died in Iraq, 15 from enemy fire. Today more women have died in this war than in any war since World War II. (Germany) Despite how many women have died, for the supporters of women rights in the military, it's a giant step for gender equality. People argue that it isn't a positive development but one that does more harm to society than good. And while women now serve on combat ships, fly combat missions and conduct door to door searches through dangerous Iraqi neighborhoods, many limits still remain. They're still restricted from infantry units, armor and field artillery companies in wartime. So while the combat doors have opened for women willing to die for their country just as the men do, the battle for complete gender equality remains a conflict. According to Elias there is over 210,000 women serve their country in the armed forces, comprising more than 15 percent of the total force. (Elias 1) About 80 percent of the jobs and more than 90 percent of the career fields are open to women, but there are still certain fields in which women can not serve in. Sadly women still face barriers. This should not be. There's no doubt that more American service women are in life-threatening situations now more than ever before. Just recently there has been a huge controversy about two women in the military who were captured during the war in Iraq and held against their will for countless days, their names are Shoshana Johnson and Jessica lynch. Shoshana Johnson and Jessica Lynch both come from poor families and both are good examples of the typical enlisted females. Many women that enlist in the military are either poor or are looking for a different alterative for college. ...

Job Seekers Do This Before LinkedIns Next Update

Job Seekers Do This Before LinkedIns Next Update Edited and published with permission from Bridget Weide Brooks. In September 2016, LinkedIn announced a redesign of its desktop (non-app) user interface. The announcement noted, â€Å"This is the largest redesign since LinkedIn’s inception.† The design update is expected to bring the desktop experience closer to what users of the LinkedIn mobile app are used to seeing. In the past, when LinkedIn has refreshed its user interface, it has removed features or moved them to be available to paid subscription accounts only. And with a forthcoming redesign imminent, LinkedIn has already announced that the Notes and Tags feature will only be available to people with Sales Navigator. There might be more changes coming as well that could result in a loss of your data, so I recommend that you back up your LinkedIn profile right now! This exercise will take you 5-10 minutes at most. Below is an official email from LinkedIn regarding the removal of the Notes and Tags features: At LinkedIn, were always looking for ways to simplify and improve your experience helping you be more productive and successful. This sometimes means removing features that arent heavily used by most of our members to invest in others that members tell us offer greater value. As such, were removing the Notes and Tags features on the LinkedIn profile, which allowed you to add notes and tags to your connections, to help manage your professional relationships. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, so please know that you can download this information through March 31, 2017. As an active user of Notes and Tags, you will find similar functionality in LinkedIns Sales Navigator. To see if Sales Navigator is right for you, we are offering you a free three-month trial*, which will allow you to transfer and view your existing notes and tags. LinkedIn Sales Navigator is a product we launched a couple of years ago and is targeted at sales professionals it lets you keep track of your existing relationships, research your network, and find new leads with tailored recommendations. Below youll find instructions on how to download and transfer your data as well as information regarding your free Sales Navigator trial. As always, please feel free to contact us with any questions. LinkedIn There are two things to do: (1) Create a PDF of your profile. This will save the content in your profile only (no photos or graphics). Here’s how: Log into your account and click on â€Å"Edit Profile† under the â€Å"Profile† menu. Next, hover over the arrow to the right of the blue â€Å"View profile as† button and it will show a dropdown menu. Choose â€Å"Save to PDF† and it will immediately save a PDF of your LinkedIn profile to the default download location on your computer. You’ll be able to open the PDF and view your content. (2) Archive your LinkedIn data. This will create spreadsheet files (in .csv format) of your LinkedIn account - your connections, contacts, email inbox, positions, and profile. It will also include a â€Å"Rich Media† folder with images included on your profile. In contrast to the PDF of your LinkedIn profile, the spreadsheet files will allow you to copy and paste your data into your LinkedIn profile, should you ever need to. In addition, if LinkedIn removes sections with the user interface redesign, you will be able to add this information back into your profile. You can find the full listing of what is included in the data archives: https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/50191/accessing-your-account-data?lang=en Here’s how to get your data archive. Note: This feature is only available using the desktop version of LinkedIn, not using the mobile app. Also, because your backup may contain private information, do not download your data using a public computer. Click on your profile photo in the upper right hand corner of your LinkedIn profile. On the drop-down menu, click on the blue â€Å"Manage† button next to â€Å"Privacy Settings.† Once on the â€Å"Privacy Settings† page, scroll down to â€Å"Getting an archive of your data.† Click on that link. That will open a drop-down menu. You will be able to choose whether you want a â€Å"fast file,† which includes selected information from your account or the â€Å"fast file with other data,† which includes account activity and history. Choose the option you want and click the blue â€Å"Request archive† button. I recommend getting the full archive (â€Å"Fast file plus other data). Once you’ve made your choice, you will be prompted to enter your password. Once you’ve done that, click the blue â€Å"Done† button. You will receive confirmation that your request has been received. You’ll receive a notification email with a download link. When you click the download link in your email, you will be taken back to your LinkedIn profile, where you will find a blue â€Å"Download† link. You have 72 hours to download the file. LinkedIn will send a second email when the rest of the data file is ready (within 24 hours). Clicking the â€Å"Download† button will create a zip folder. Once you unzip it, you will see the .csv files with your connections, contacts, inbox, positions, profile, and registration information, plus a folder containing your Rich Media. For your first-level connections, you’ll receive a file that contains First Name, Last Name, Email Address, Current Company, Current Position, and Tags. If you get an error when trying to request your data archive, try it again using a different Internet browser, or try it again later. If you use a premium LinkedIn Sales Navigator account, export your notes and tags to Sales Navigator. It is rumored that the notes and tags feature is going away with the user interface update.Log into your Sales Navigator account. Move your cursor over your photo in the top right corner of the Sales Navigator home page and select â€Å"Settings.† Under â€Å"Import LinkedIn.com,† click â€Å"Import to Sales Navigator† next to â€Å"Notes Tags.† Now that you’ve seen how easy this is to do, make it a habit to export your data - once a quarter is probably sufficient if you don’t add a lot of new connections regularly, or once a month if you do. Allyn and Bacon, 2007. Social Problems in A Diverse Society, 4th Essay - 1

Allyn and Bacon, 2007. Social Problems in A Diverse Society, 4th Edition. Diana Kend - Essay Example his leads to custody battles, especially where young children are involved, as each parent deems themselves capable of taking care of their children, though not wanting to relent care to the other. Alcohol-induced violence has also become a common occurrence as more people are turning to alcohol to lessen their problems. To tie them all together is financial turmoil, which can also be seen as one of the greater causes of the aforementioned issues that families often face. Many people believe that family dynamics hardly exist today as peoples’ lives become more shrouded with secrecy and trouble. Especially in homes that are experiencing the previously mentioned issues, family dynamics are practically nonexistent. How family members relate to one another is important, becoming something that determines how the family is capable of holding up during times of crisis and strife. To alter or change the current typical family dynamics, families need to aim at spending more time with each other, and to make it a daily task to see how everyone is doing. If individual family members can show that they are willing to become close with their other family members, making attempts at relating to each other, then others will slowly open up as well. Family dinners, outings that involve the entire family participating in something together, or even just finding a few minutes to talk to each other everyday can make a world full of difference in the dynamics of a family. They cannot hope to relate to each other unless they try to make attempts at understanding each other first. The major consequence of family issues and a lack of family dynamics is that families can be easily torn apart, though each family will have its own reasons for having done so. This can lead to estranged family members, further issues, and a major lack of foundation. In this day and age, family is all that most people have to rely on, so it would be unwise to shunt those people aside. A family with good

Water pollution here in wisconsin Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Water pollution here in wisconsin - Essay Example It is also to be noted that higher efforts and commitments to treating waste water by the authorities and industries responsible, the ever increasing volumes of wastes from the industries and settlements overwhelm the efforts of treatment (By Amy and,Christi, para 1-6). On the other hand, weaknesses in enforcing the legal framework to curb such pollutions coupled with the compromises that result from negligence in the individual industries complicates the process and thus resulting to the ever increasing problem of contamination of water sources. In general, water protection efforts within the city suffer a myriad of issues which includes deep rooted corruption, political pressures, lack of and compromise in health standards, poor inspection and monitoring processes, ineffective riles as well as problems of increased sedimentation. The outcome of such mass pollution of the water sources within the city can be attributed to so many problems basic to which is the health complication to the residents. The discharge of contaminated water into the water sources that serve the city and the suburbs around pose a great risk to the welfare of the people within Wisconsin. Besides the aquatic life in the rivers, streams, and the lakes within the city are exposed to great risk. Fish in particular would be exposed to such risks of death from the contaminated water and this would have adverse effects not only to the populations which rely on the fish for food but also towards the economy at large (Weigel and Dale 691-708). However, the main question that remains critical is on what role the government should play in fight against water pollution within the state and the associated effects? Besides, what are exact effects of water pollution in the city with special regard to aquatic life? Finally, how does fish from contaminated water pose a health risk to the populations living

A comparative study between the regulations of the U.S. and the United Essay

A comparative study between the regulations of the U.S. and the United Kingdom on Hip Hop music - Essay Example The notion of censorship has always been warily approached with differing emotions. Whereas many regard censorship as a form of curtailment against individual liberty and freedom of speech, there are also some who would argue for censorship as a necessary mechanism for the protection of civil society and public order. In our present day, for example, several organizations both in government and outside government, espouse the need to filter media content. Within governments, we have UK’s Office of Communications and the United States has its own Federal Communications Commission. Outside governments, organizations such as the Parents’ Music Research Center actively campaign for censorship as a necessary defense against the corruption of young minds. From the early days of the Inquisition wherein large volumes of books and other literature labeled as sacrilegious or scandalous were ripped into shreds before being thrown into large flaming pyres, till today’s curre nt practice of censorship cuts on mass-produced films and broadcast programs, artistic work has consistently come under the magnifying glass and scrutiny of regulating bodies bent on filtering the content of mass media which reach the common population.
